The Mrit Sanjeevani Mantra is composed of three parts: the first part is a salutation to Lord Shiva, the second part is a prayer for his protection and healing, and the third part is a request for liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The mantra is as follows:

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pustivardhanam Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat

The meaning of the mantra is:

We worship the three-eyed Lord Shiva, who is fragrant and nourishes all beings. May he liberate us from the bondage of death, like a ripe cucumber from its stem, and grant us immortality.

The mantra is said to have originated from the Rig Veda, one of the oldest and most sacred scriptures of Hinduism. According to a legend, the mantra was revealed by Lord Shiva himself to Rishi Markandeya, a sage who was destined to die at the age of 16. When the god of death, Yama, came to take his life, Markandeya clung to a Shiva linga (a symbol of Shiva) and chanted the Mrit Sanjeevani Mantra. Lord Shiva appeared and saved him from death, granting him eternal life and wisdom.

The Mrit Sanjeevani Mantra is considered to be one of the most powerful mantras in Hinduism. It is believed that chanting it with faith and devotion can bestow various benefits, such as:

  • Healing of physical and mental ailments

  • Protection from accidents, enemies, and evil forces

  • Longevity and youthfulness

  • Peace and happiness

  • Spiritual growth and enlightenment

The mantra can be chanted by anyone, regardless of age, gender, or caste. However, it is advisable to chant it with proper pronunciation, understanding, and reverence. The mantra can be chanted in various ways, such as:

  • Chanting it 108 times daily in the morning or evening

  • Chanting it with a rosary made of rudraksha beads (sacred seeds associated with Shiva)

  • Chanting it with offerings of water, milk, honey, or flowers to Lord Shiva
